The Convenience Trap: Cloud Backup
Certain non-custodial wallets offer users an option to save an encrypted copy of their recovery data directly to a cloud service like Google Drive or Apple iCloud.
While this feature is tempting—it feels like a safety net against a lost phone—it introduces a single, catastrophic point of failure: you are putting your master key online.
3 Reasons Why Digital Backups are Dangerous
Even though the wallet “encrypts” the file, it is never as safe as you think:
- Hacking the Weakest Link: Attackers do not need to hack the blockchain; they just need to hack your weakest link—your cloud account. If a hacker gains access to your Google or iCloud email and password through a phishing attack, they have the encrypted file that unlocks your entire crypto portfolio.
